The story & symbolism
Winter solstice is the time in a year where the day is the shortest and thus marks a point where days start getting longer and longer. Because of this, it was an important marking of time and also a symbolic new start - that's why our years start roughly around the time of the winter solstice as it's been natural for humans to count the start of a new year from this. It also reflects in later religious mythologies where this ancient tradition is somehow tied into their fantasy. It is also why we have new year resolutions, it is a very human way of experiencing time, the birth of something new, the time for new beginnings

The symbol I've used here to symbolize the sun is known as a Sun Cross, which is found on numerous petroglyphs in Northern Europe - the same symbol appears also in many other cultures, where it's also believed to symbolize the sun. The wheel and sun were interwined for ancient people, as many stories relvolve around the sun spinning in the sky like a wheel or being dragged by a horse and so on. An interesting thing with the winter solstice is also that many passage tombs, a sort of huge stone mounds from the stone age (~3000 years ago), are aligned so that during the winter solstice the sun shines in from the 'door' of the mound, signaling a new sign for those buried in those mounds

The stone age mounds were built by a culture that venerated their dead, they held ancestor worship in great regard. The dead were buried in these mounds sitting upright and occasional offerings were given to these forefathers. The mounds are also the reason I've included mountains on this design, to symbolize how grand to these ancient people these mounds were - and they are a symbol of great communal togetherness, as you can not build these mounds by yourself. It involved the whole community and shows how humans always benefit from banding together.
SOLAR CROSSES DURING WINTER
This is a picture taken by me at my home in Sweden, during the winter of 2024. You can see from here how the sun wheel appears during winter time around the sun, and when it's nicely crisp and cold, you can see it really well. This is the same solar cross I've used on this design
PASSAGE GRAVES
These are the passage graves, that here I've depicted as these mountains. These passage graves are aligned so that during winter solstice the sun shines on the people sitting in the mound - signaling to them the birth of a new year.
