More about project Hoenir

Hoenir is an English to Old Norse translator that I've developed during 2024 and until now. These things are known as 'language-models' and it uses machine learning to be able to take into account nuances found in Old Norse. The current version is trained on 128 000+ sentence pairs that I've gotten from runestones, sagas, carvings etc - basically anything I could find in Old Norse language :D

I will continue adding translations and monitoring which translations you fellas are more interested in, so over time it will get more and more specific. I also plan to add a Old Norse to English translator along the way as well as other languages and for an ability to generate kennings as well. Kennings are basically 'riddle-like nicknames' and were very prevelant in Old Norse poetry known as Eddic and Skaldic poetry. A kenning is basically calling Odin a "raven-god" and so on.

The name Hoenir comes from a Norse god, one of three gods said to have created humans. Hoenir was the one that gave humans reason.

This website is really great! I am a wood worker who often carves in the Old Norse style. I like to include titles, either in Icelandic or runes. Takk Fyrir!

Thanks for all the kind words so far and everyone using it! I’ve also fixed the “ý” as Firanto mentioned :)

This is cool. Anyway, I’d like to give feedback. The word “illuminate” is translated to “lýsa”. But apparently, the futhark/rune doesn’t have the equivalent for the “ý”, which means, “lýsa” will be written as “ᛚýᛊᚨ” in older futhark (notice the “ý” in the second character).

Great things anyway. Thanks.
