The story & symbolism
I've made this chessboard inspired by several finds from the scandinavian iron age. People back then had several board games which we have evidence of as well, one of the games they played was Hnefatafl. That game is similar to chess, but the board consists of a bit more squares. These chessboards are inspired by the finds of Hnefatafl and Sami board games, numbering and lettering on the board I've had a bit of artistic freedom with though - since there is no rune equivalent to numbers then I've created my own version of a runic-number system, which you can learn more about below:
Runes as board lettering
I've used runes as the letters on the board, following the FUTHARK sequence here instead of an ABC alphabet order - a great way to memorize the starting sequence of runes or the first aett, as an aett consists of 8 runes and the Elder Futhark consists of 3 aetts.
Numbers in runes
Since in runes numbers don't have runic symbols to them I've created my own logic based on a human hand, similarly how we have the 10 set numbering system. The symbol grows as two palms of fingers - with 5 being marked with a downward stroke and symbolizing a thumb, making it easier to see 5 and 10.

Items are measured by being laid flat on the ground, not by circumference. If you have any items that fit you well, lay them on the ground and measure them to get the best fit
