The story & symbolism
The name Metsän Vanhempi Otson Mies comes from Proto-Finnic, a language spoken by the many Finnic tribes like Finns, Estonians, Karelians, Veps and so on. Metsän means 'of the forest', Vanhempi is a title meaning the elder which was used as a ruler and Otson Mies means a follower of Otso, a bear spirit/god of Finnic mythology. The amulet is inspired by finds from around the areas where Permian people lived and now the Udmurt people live. The name Perm comes likely from Pērāmaa which means "back land" or "border land" suggesting that the name could've been given to them by some Finnic tribes a bit further away from them, or they viewed themselves as living on the edge of the world. The amulet features a man and bear being one, the bear is sacred to Finnic tribes and the shamanic people of these tribes could take on the form of a bear or talk with the bear god Otso. Otso is not a single bear but the general forest spirit of all bears, and when these tribes needed to kill or hunt down a bear, they would have what is called an Peijaiset - a ritual where the skull or head of the bear was hung on a tall pine tree facing east, as is custom with a lot of burials of the ancient people so that the dead could see the sun rise. This is likely so the bear could join with the stars again, as that is where the bear is believed to come from. This amulet also features four small bear cubs around the belt area, this is inspired by the original find, this could be reference to the person that is communing with the bear spirit, he is seen as a messenger of Otso and the bear cubs, symbolising regular bears, are listening to the shaman.
The amulet is used to ward off unexpected counters in the forest and wild as well as to honor bears. The one who wears this can commune near pine trees with the land spirit of the area they are at, to understand if they are welcome there or should leave and what offering the land spirits want.
