The story & symbolism
Raun unites Finno-Ugric lore in one powerful guardian. Known by many variants of names like Rauna, Rauni, Ryönikkä, Ravdna - she raises a Sámi-inspired drum with a raindeer pelt padded striker, summoning rhythm and trance. Her antlers crown is a representation of thunder striking. And behind the antlers she carries red rowan-berries, the soother or lightnings raw nature. The partner of Raun is said to have been the thunder god Uku/Ukko/Thora-Galles who creates lightining. They are a divine couple, Raun representing the rain, the calm after the storm, the rainbow and Uku being the rough part of a thunder-storm. Rowan berries and twigs were used by all Finno-Ugric cultures to ward off lightning from their homes. And sacrifices were made to raun in the form of raindeer hides in caves that were hidden in rowan tree groves. She is draped in a sacred bear pelt, as the bear is a vital part of Finnic myhtology. Her clothes bear motifs from rock paintings and folk dresses. Raun is a weather goddess, she stands for protection against sudden misfortune, like a lightning strike could bring. Raun helps you in connecting with nature and to reach a state of trance where you could relax and rest. Place her on your altar or shelf to invite grounding rhythms, storm-proof resilience, and the steady heartbeat of ancestral wisdom into everyday life. To your home she brings nice smells of post rainy day, the magic of nature and protection against sudden things that might cause misfortune to your home.
HEAD
She is seen with her eyes closed, singing a chant to soothe you. The horns on her headdress represent lightning strikes and show her absorbing it. The headdress was also inspired by the find from Dürrenberg, where a shaman was found with a elaborate headdress consisting of bones, fangs and animal teeth. Similar finds have been found all around northern europe and hint at a cerntain amount of specific animal parts being vital for a shamans headdress, hinting at that there likely was a structured way to practics shamanism.
ROWAN BERRIES
Her headdress on the back of the head also features rowan berries, those are also where she gets her name from. These protect against lightning, so it works in unision with the front of the headdress where the horns represent a lightning strike, this shows the rowan berries absorbing it.
SAMI DRUM
The Sami people are an Uralic group, closely related to the Finno-Ugric people. They share a lot of mythology and originate from the same place, likely around the Ural mountains. To pay homage to that, she is holding a sami drum with art on it and using a raindeer hide drum stick to strike the drum, something that is not that common - as mostly antlers are used, but I thought it looks pretty and that way I can fit in the raindeer hide offerings more to her, as she would use them for her drum and the striker then.
BEAR PELT & FINNIC ART
She is wearing a bear pelt, as the bear plays a huge part in Finno-Ugric and Uralic mythology. The artwork I've included on her dress is inspired by numerous finds, but also by my own interpretation of Finno-Ugric art being with sharp corners - this is not something 100% true to history, but considering they carved in wood a lot, then it makes sense that it would have lines that were connected. As well as rock paintings from Finland often depict triangular shapes and the Sami drums have right-angled symbols and characters.
