The story & symbolism
The god Freyr is associated with kingship, weddings, royalty and fertility. He is often depicted with an erect phallus as we can learn from records such as Adam of Bremen and statues that have been found which supposedly depict this deity. The statue here can be worn by the neck as all the male deities on the site and has references that you can read about below.
Inspired by
This is a figure called the Rällinge statuette, found in Södermanland, Sweden. It is thought to depict Freyr and I've made my piece inspired by this one.
The face
Inspired by the above piece, the faceguard is also resembling a hilt of an upside-down sword. It evolves into a maypole and the maypole rings I've also made to be references to marriage - as we learn from Adam of Bremen that when a marriage was to be hold, the people sacrificed to Freyr.
Sword phallus
He can be seen holding a sword, which is often attributed to Freyr and it is said that his sword fight for itself. The pommel is of phallus head shape - so the whole blade of the sword has a double meaning to also resemble a mighty pulsating juicy shaft.
Boar symbolism
If you look at the original find, you can see spiral shapes on the back. I've made these to resemble boar tusks on this piece, with a boar eye on top of it as well. This is due to Freyr being known to own a boar called Gullinbursti.
Fertility and kinghsip
The bottom spirals are a reference to fertility and I've tried to depict him as a king with a fur lined collar and a highly decorated garment on him with the rings.
