The story & symbolism
haven't really drawn heroes from sagas at all, I realized, so who else would i start with if none other than the legendary viking, Ragnar. Here, depicted as a chess piece sort of style as the brave warrior he was. He is standing in a pit of snakes as he is told to end up in one on his final raid. The king Aella throws him into a snake pit and before that Ragnar sings the poem Krakumal, which means the crows song. That is why I've depicted a bird on his attire, the bird itself being based on a banner which is said to have belonged to Ragnar himself - it probably depicted a raven though and the song likely being a reference to his wife Aslaug who was nicknamed Kraka and could understand bird language.
In Krakumal he also invokes his sons to avenge him, which they do by forming the Great Summer Army (also known as the Great Heathen Army). This I've depicted here at the bottom, the row of berserkers seen biting their shields symbolizing that army. The figures themselves represent his many sons Erik, Agnar, Ivar, Björn, Hvitserk, Sigurd, Ragnvald. And in the middle is Odin, as Ragnar has said he is a descendant of Odin himself - and there the Allfather stands, leading them all to his halls.
