The story & symbolism
I hung from the windy tree 9 whole nights
Without food and water
As an offering to the god of the hanged
Once I returned down, only then did I find the runes
I picked them up from the bottom of the tree
And shouted them out, for man to learn them as well
This is the god Odin, standing in front of the tree he hung from for 9 long days - likely Yggdrasil. And here I've depicted the runes being revealed to him on the tree bark after he had completed the challenge. The tale of the runes coming from the gods is actually attested in many places, one of them being the Sparlösa stone.
