The story & symbolism
The popular 9 year sacrifice temple. Since the look of the construction is unknown, only written texts exists then I’ve made it how I think it might’ve looked loke as well as adding elements we know to the design. The main inspiration came from the beautiful early stave churches as I believe architecture changed slower for religious places
We know of the looks of this temple from Adam of Bremen, it is said a golden chain surrounded the temple that could be visible from afar, I’ve also included the chain around the two pieces here. Inside the temple there would be three gods - Odin and Freyr to the sides and Thor in the center. Freyr was said to have a huge 🍆 and Odin was said to have worn armor and Thor having a mace or scepter. There are also other “lesser” gods or figures of importance in the temple to worship
I’ve depicted Freyr to the left and Odin to the right with only Thors gauntlet and his hammer Mjölnir at the top - this is my interpretation as if the temple was on a hill and a long pole reaching towards the sky then lightning could strike that long point and thus appearing as the Mjölnir is causing the lightning. Not too sure how practical it wouldve been on a wooden building but hey would look cool right
The temple is said to also have a huge evergreen tree next to it and a well in front. This is the reason i made this top of wood and it can be seen dripping with water
The point with these pictures is that the original might be lost to time, but as long as we pass these stories and legends on, as long as we have a sense of identity and belonging - it still lives on with us
