The story & symbolism
This candleholder is in honor of the goddess Hel. I call it a candleholder because I just need to have name for it, but in practice you can use the well she holds for many things, like plants, making little offerings to Hel, holding things and so on. We all know of wishing upon a well and this can be your portable wishwell or a vessel to talk with those who we cannot always see, but can feel around us.
Double sided
Hel is said to have a side that was humanlike and another side that was dark blue or unvisible and hard to make out. Therefore I've depicted her as well with two sides, one that has pretty patterns, braided hair, healthy skin and beautiful golden jewelry. The other side is deteriorated, straight eerie hair, worn skin with her ribs showing and instead of jewelry there are bones and fangs. She is therefore a goddess that rules over the beautiful and the ugly at the same time, as there can not exist beauty without faults and right withour wrong.
Unfinished bracteates
On her skirt she wears the blanks of bracteates, these are to be filled as great kings pass through Helheim, her home, and she decides if they are considered truly great men or if they will be forgotten to time. Therefore she can either have a bracteate from her skirt be made in honor of a fallen person, or instead she will throw into the river of Hel where the dead swim an empty bracteate, a punishment greater than anything else, a true death that someone will be forever forgotten and fade into history.
Hvergelmir
Her well she holds is Hvergelmir, a great well on the roots of the world tree Yggdrasil. Within that well are said to be vast amounts of snakes, which I've depicted as the ornaments surrounding the well. As well as Níðhöggr is said to orbit that well, thus on her attire I've depicted a serpent rising from behind the well. Within the well you can see that hands of those fallen, trying to crawl out, but they are forver doomed within the halls of Hel. This is a reminder that when you wish something upon the well that Hel holds, that for you it's not too late to do right and to live a great life, so make your wishes count and make your actions matter.
