The story & symbolism
A design in honor of the fate-weaving Norns from Norse Mythology. It is a part of a series of designs that honor gods and beings from the viking age and prior. The point of these designs is that they are like wearable stories - you can discover tales based on the designs as there are references and hints to the deities and beings they honor. Storytelling has been a major part of human history and that is something I want to continue with my designs. The Norns themselves are very mysterious. This design is based on the three main Norns that live under one of the roots of Yggdrasil and even though it's unclear if they represent the past, present and future I've depicted them as such on this design. If you'd like to learn more about these mysterious beings you can do so at our Norns Article!
Frontside
The front features the norn Skuld who is depicted as the future, as the future is always ahead of you it is in the front - with her eyes closed she is depicted as sleeping, but when future becomes present she will open her eyes and experience the present. The front also features a design in the middle which symbolizes the well of Urdr which the Norns have close to their residence.
Sleeve
The sleeves feature the norn Verdandi, symbolized here as the present with her eyes open. They are all depicted in treebark due to their connection with the world tree Yggdrasil, as they reside under one of it's roots. The sleeves also continue the front well design with incatations on the sleeves and underneath the face of the norn lies an aura with figures inspired by the Gallehus horn as a reference to fate.
Backside
The backside features Urdr and she is depicted as the past. Because the past is always behind you and you should leave it there, the eyes have also been covered with a cloth as symbolism for that you can always think about the past but you cannot see there anymore as you are not there.Same way as the front the well of Urdr is present in the middle, with smaller figures of the norns surrounding it and a root of Yggdrasil reaching out from the bottom of it.
Hood
The hood features a story of two people in midgard, from growing up and becoming notable figures to their downfall, in which they go to the afterlife where they meet eachother. This is a reference to fate and how it can not be changed and an overall mystery around the cycle of life.
