The story & symbolism
The god of the sky, the thunderer - associated with lightning and thunder. He is likely a very old deity as we have evidence of a god names Perkwunos. He is also associated with the oak and was one of the five gods in the pagan temple in Kiev - he was depicted with a golden moustache and similary to Thor being associated with the hammer he was tied to the use of axes with many pendants being found from pre-christian times that are shaped like axeheads and bear symbols attributed to Perun. He was a god amongst the Slavic people and Baltic people, as well as stretching back in time to many other cultures.
Head
Depicted with the golden moustache that is also a reference to his association with the oak as the moustache is shaped like the roots of an oak as well as having tree bark texutre. He is also featured with a helmet found in Kiev that is dated to around the 10th-11th century and the top of the helmet is similar to many Slavic helmets found from that same time.
Axe and armor
Seen wielding a twohanded axe which head is decorated as a reference to his association with the axe as well as a scale armor that seems to have been unique to Slavic people.
Nine sons
His back features nine long figures, which are inspired by the popularity of pole-like deity posts amongs Slavic paganism. These represent Peruns nine sons - holding spears and guarding him in all directions.
Symbol of perun
On the back of his helmet can be seen a symbol which has been attributed to the thunder god Perun himself.
