The story & symbolism
Eikthyrnir is a deer that roams on top of Valhalla and feasts on the leaves of a tree that grows there, some interpret this tree as Yggdrasil. Her name means oak thorn, which is a common way to give someone a nickname or name in old norse societies, since she has antlers and likely feasts on oak leaves, thus she is the oaks thorns. It could also be interpreted as she has very thick horns like the core of an oak. It is also said that from her horns/antlers drips water so far that it reaches Hvergelmir, a well at the bottom of one of the roots of Yggdrasil. These rivers flow through the lands of the gods and even reach that of us humans in midgard (the earth). Here I've depicted her and the serpernt Níðhöggr who also roams close to where Hvergelmir lies.
