The story & symbolism
The legendary drakkar, the dragon ship of the North. Unlike the temples, we have incredible archaeological finds like the Oseberg and Gokstad ships, so we know exactly how brilliant their clinker-built construction was. These vessels were the lifeblood of the Viking Age, engineered with shallow drafts that allowed them to cross treacherous waters and navigate far up shallow inland rivers. I wanted to focus on the imposing silhouette of the prow, capturing how it might have looked cutting through dense sea fog.

The most striking feature of the drakkar is the carved beast head. Historically, these terrifying dragon or serpent figureheads were mounted to intimidate enemies and ward off dangerous sea monsters, though lore states they were often removed when approaching friendly shores so as not to frighten the local land spirits. I’ve included the intricately carved head looking forward, alongside two round shields mounted along the gunwale - a practice typically done when the ship was moored or moving slowly near the coast to display allegiance and strength.

I designed the bottom edges of the hull to look splintered and incomplete, intentionally leaving the rest of the massive vessel to the imagination. The wood is depicted as heavily weathered by salt, wind, and storm, slowly eroding and dissolving into the dark background.

The point with this piece, much like the temple, is that the physical oak inevitably rots away, lost to the depths of the sea or buried deep in the earth. But the spirit of exploration, the courage to sail into the unknown, and the ingenuity of our ancestors remain permanently anchored in our minds as long as we keep their stories alive.
