The story & symbolism
The Norse goddess Nott is the personification of the night. She rides the horse Hrimfaxi across the sky to bring night across the land. She has had three marriages which have resulted in the children: Dagr - personification of daytime, Auðr - whose name means prosperity and Jörð - personification of earth. She gently cloaks the world in darkness, offering rest, reflection and rejuvenation. Call forth Nott when you need to recap events, when you need to take time off and replan, but she can also be turned to when you need help with sleep, restoring a normal rhythm or if you need help with clearing your dreams, anxiousness or worries. She helps you with inner reflection and guides you through emotional and spiritual darkness. When you feel aimless and lost, Nott will be the one to comfort you that there is beauty in the dark and she will teach you to thread through it, embracing it's nuances and showing you how these dark times can grow you as a person. In your home she brings great dreams, a healthy sleep pattern, calmness, innovation, renewal and the warm light embrace of the dark cold night.
HOODED FACE
Because she is the personification of night I've decided to depict her with a shrouded dark face, her hood which symbolizes the night on this piece is covering her face for us to see. She can also be seen wearing three brooches, as a reference to her three marriages and/or three children from those marriages - symbolising that each marriage and child she carries with her.
HOLDING THE SUN
She is holding the sun in her hands, depicted here as we believe to be a symbol for the sun from Scandinavian petroglyphs - a cartwheel like symbol with four dots in it. Here I've depicted her holding the sun and kinda hiding it under her shroud as symbolism to the night covering the light for us. This is also a reference to Dagr, her son, who is as mentioned the personification of daytime. Below the sun we can see her horse Hrimfaxi, who is followed by three sunrays.
BACK SIDE
On the back we can see her robe which is wrinkled to look like fabric but also a symbolisation to the northern lights. As below her robe we see 9 circular figures - these are a reference to the 9 realms of Norse Mythology. Symbolising that Nott arrives in all of those realms, covering the land with darkness and cold air as well as the northern lights (aurora borealis) being visible from all of these realms during night time.
