The story & symbolism
On this design the outer side to be of knots symbolize being stuck in/tied up - with some of the knots already being unwinded and broken, leaving him furious with an anxiously waiting look on his face. This is a reference to he story of the great wolf Fenrir being tied up by the gods because they fear that he will grow so big that the gods cannot overcome him. This decision to tie him up is helped by the prophecy that Fenrir will devour Odin at the event of Ragnarök.
