The story & symbolism
The Paleolithic flint spearhead. Unlike the forged iron of the Viking Age, these early, masterfully crafted stone tools represent the very dawn of human survival and ingenuity. The knapping of flint was perhaps our first great technological leap, requiring immense skill, patience, and an intimate knowledge of the earth's materials to shape a weapon capable of taking down the massive beasts of the Ice Age.
I wanted to emphasize the raw, faceted texture of the chipped stone in this piece, highlighting the fracture lines where ancient hands painstakingly struck flake after flake to achieve a razor-sharp edge. The stone is shown firmly secured to its wooden shaft with tightly wound cordage - likely sinew or strong plant fibers. This hafting was a crucial innovation, transforming a simple hand-held blade into a true projectile and equalizer in a harsh world.
Following the theme of this series, the wooden shaft is depicted as splintered and incomplete, slowly dissolving into the dark background. In the archaeological record, we are almost always left with only the enduring stone points, while the organic wood, leather, and bindings have long since rotted away. The physical shaft may turn to dust, and the names of the hunters who wielded it are forever lost to time, but that enduring drive to adapt, survive, and shape our world remains the very foundation of the human story.
