The main chant is featured on some of the swords, as well as other phrases like “Aid me Tyr”, “Provide me with strength Tyr” and just the three Tiwaz runes and name of Tyr is present throughout the design. They eyeguards and helm elements are made up of swords as well due to the association with war that Tyr has. The helm split part is a spear that runs through the suncross symbol to hint at the oath Tyr broke when binding Fenrir, it shades the sun but then again it was a necessary step that seemed right at the time. The design branches out with a circle of stacked Tiwaz runes which roots read out Tiwaz in Elder Futhark. Further out the design is finished with swords engraved with chants towards Tyr and to invoke the powers of Tyr, these are different Viking age sword models.

Left arm

The left arm consist of a stacked and stylized Tiwaz rune on the shoulder with swords around it that clash on the lower part. This is the law and ruling hand of Tyr on this design to symbolize strength, power and determination. The chants written in runes run around the arm as well reading “LAÞU LAUKAR GAKAR ALU” which is up for debate what it means but one possibility is it reads “let healing tread nearby” – the latter part ALU is often found on many runic inscriptions and is speculated to be associated with Ale which ties into the Mead of Poetry. It held an important meaning when these inscriptions were made and was likely a way to empower or underline a certain ability. Nowaday a lot of languages still have hints to this word ALU for example in Estonian it’s ÕLU, Lithuanian ALAUS.

Right arm

The right arm consists of Fenrir swallowing half of the hand to pay homage to the story where Tyr lost his arm to the large wolf when the gods tried to bind him. The gods brought different chains to shackle Fenrir as the wolf was growing so large that they became afraid of him and Odin had heard that during Ragnarokkr – that the allfathers faith would end in the hands of Fenrir. Thus the gods decided to bind him, fooling him into a competition to see how many chains he could break, hoping that they could lock him down. But the great wolf broke all the chains that were tried. Eventually the gods had the best craftsmen, the dwarves, create a shackle made of impossible things like the sinew of a bear and the beards of women. Fenrir saw this measly thing that he was about to be chained with and didn’t trust it – so he asked one of the gods to place their hand between it’s jaws in case they are trying to trick him. Tyr was the only one up to take this task as back then breaking an oath was the worst thing one could do, honor had great value. So as Fenrir understood that he can’t break free he locked his jaws and broke off Tyr’s hand. A sword was placed between Fenrirs jaws so he could not howl while locked away – the sword is present in this design as well with the runes reading “Fenrir” on it. The lower part of Fenrir is stylized in a pattern similar to the Viking age art as well as a rune row running through it with the chants towards Tyr – this is to symbolize the chain that is made of impossible things, it wouldn’t look regular but something very otherwordly.

Front design

The front repeats the part seen on the left arm but instead of a stacked Tiwaz rune it features the sun cross inside it. On them are also pictures and motifs which seem to depict a ceremony with creatures and animals. Several of these humanoid creatures feature what appear to be horns - possibly a headdress as well as a figure with three heads, perhaps a forgotten god, certainly a myth that might have been lost. On one of the horns can be seen a number of human figures which have been speculated to be a ciphered sentence or chant where each person resembles a letter. The original horns sadly do not exist anymore due to a goldsmith stealing them and melting them down in 1802. There were casts made of the original horns but they too suffered a poor faith, ending up in a ship wreck and have never been found. The reconstruction of these horns were made entirely on pictures of the original horns - these were also stolen in 1993 but luckily found nearby the museum they were stolen from. Then again in 2007 another replica of these horns made from silver were stolen but recovered shortly after. So my best advice is to keep an eye on this piece of apparel because people seem to want to steal it.

Kragehul spearshaft

Dated to a similar period during the 4th to 6th century it was rediscovered in 1877 from a bog. Bogs were among popular places to make sacrifices to, this is largely due to the bogs preserving what's offered to them - sacrifices to the sea could have been popular as well but we would not know about it since we have no evidence. The spearshaft features the Elder Futhark on it and reads 'ᛖᚲ ᛖᚱᛁᛚᚨᛉ ᚨᛊᚢᚷᛁᛊᚨᛚᚨᛊ ᛗᚢᚺᚨ ᚺᚨᛁᛏᛖ ᚷᚨᚷᚨᚷᚨ' with the latter part of ᚷ and ᚨ being written as one, a bindrune. It features the popular 'Ek Erilaz' which means 'I the erilaz' and a chant at the end. Erilaz could've been an early name for Earl or Jarl, it's also associated with ale similar to how ALU is written on a lot of runic inscriptions and means a sort of ale likely. The spearshaft is one of the many exmaples which suggest runes were not used just for writing, but for chants/magic/invocations and so on. Considering it's written on a spear shaft it could have been a sacrifice to Odin as the Allfather is known as the spear god and the ending 'gagaga' part could be a chant towards him. If the word Erilaz means infact someone from nobility it also would make sense this is a sacrifice to Odin as he was the god of nobility and poets.

Lindholm amulet

This one is dated to around the 2nd to 6th century again found from a bog. It was rediscovered in 1840 and split in half, which resulted in the loss of one rune on the inscription but the artifact is otherwise intact. It also features the word Erilaz on it as well as what appears to be a chant or sequence of runes reading 'ᛖᚲᛖᚱᛁᛚᚨᛉᛋᚨ[ᚹ]ᛁᛚᚨᚷᚨᛉᚺᚨᛏᛖᚲᚨ ᛬ ᚨᚨᚨᚨᚨᚨᚨᚨᛉᛉᛉᚾᚾ[ᚾ]ᛒᛗᚢᛏᛏᛏ᛬ᚨᛚᚢ᛬' as you can see the sequence end in 'ALU'. The ansuz runes have been interpreted as a reference to Odin or perhaps several gods from the pantheon. The bone has been reshaped to appear as a rib bone, this is likely not done randomly. It's possible this is a story we have lost or not yet rediscovered where a god or legend was associated with a rib, perhaps there are other amulets like this which would complete a set but as of right now we don't know. Thus it was agreed that the great symbol in the center depicts the tree Yggdrasil, from which the god Odin hanged himself to learn the runes.

It is also notable that on this design are animals with 8 feet. Possibly Sleipnir? Or perhaps depicting animals running fast, and where Sleipnir got his likeness from too. There are also temples or some kind of buildings on these and ships - therefore it is believed the depict the arriving of Ragnarök. In my opinion it symbolises some kind of great movement, either a migration - as we know around the viking age was also the migration period. And one of the possible causes for the viking age was that the people started moving out from Scandinavia, the reasons are unknown - perhaps this depicts this period, as it dates to roughly the same period.

YGGDRASIL

The symbol for Yggdrasil, it is shown almost extruding from an animals head - this could symbolize some animal at the depths of Yggdrasil, but I believe its just a question of perspective. I believe the animal is just in front of Yggdrasil. On the top of the tree we can see a bird, and we have literary evidence of a bird on top of Yggdrasil as well - named Víðópnir.

OTHER TREE

There is notably another symbol on this as well - that is very similar. It varies a little bit but also features a bird on top. My own interpretation is that this is also Yggdrasil but from futher away. So the rows on the tapestry are as if zooming out and showing that the whole land is filled with people and animals moving in one direction. Here you can also see an animal with 8 legs which I believe is Sleipnir.

ANIMALS AND OTHER

On the rest of the design are very interesting different animals - birds, horses, deers and so on. Also you can see what seems to be a gaming board for the 'viking chess' known as Hnefatafl. And you might have noticed it - another horse with 8 legs with two people on it. There is the story of Hadingus riding with Odin on a horse thats likely Sleipnir, this story comes from Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus. The other story that would've applied is when Hermod went to get his brother Baldr from Hel - he rode there on Sleipnir, but he did not return with Baldr. So this could be the story that has reached us through Saxo or it is a story that has not made its way to us yet. It can be lost to time, or it can be hiding somewhere, waiting to be found again.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0106/6565/6416/files/Overhogdal1_09446d0d-903a-4e8c-9579-01fc7454d2da.jpg?v=1778350555
norse-mythology-thulr
Norse Mythology Thulr

The story & symbolism

This design is a combination of different artworks I've done to honor the Norse Gods. Each of them is set to represent a landscape or natural occurance that is fitting for them. The design itself is presented in a rough grungy way with a denimlike pattern, even though the fabric itself is as listed above.

TROLLSKOG ULLR

The embodiment of vast and deep nordic forests, trollskog means trolls forest and that is what Ullr is wearing in this piece. His cloak is made of moss, stones and fallen tree branches, which are characteristic of trollskogs. His hat is a large mushroom with a crooked tree growing out of it, and he wears on his branches 9 odal amulets, which symbolise the rings to swear oaths on. Ullr was said to be a god associated with oaths. In this piece he is in summer mode, meaning he does not have his skiis, instead the skiis have merged into being his bow - he can whenever he wishes to break out his skiis from the bow though as he is a great wizard

On his back, he wears his shield, which is said to be able to travel across water. The shield here also symbolizes the sun, which Ullr representing the trollskog is wearing on his back, thus blocking out the sun, as often sun can not reach through the thick trees onto the ground, leaving it hard to navigate - instead you need to rely on other factors like moss on trees

His belt is a waterfall and the undergarment is stones and soil, which lie under the trollskog. His beard is earth worms, and the bottom of his cloak is roots of the trees. And some berries here and there as a cherry on top!

On your walks into deep forests, should you get lost, listen to the sounds of the branches and the wind. In these sounds lie the whispers that draw you closer to Ullr, who is waiting for you. Leave offerings the size of your palm in nine places. Leave them in stone, wood, moss, and water - on your ninth offering, Ullr will appear with his nine rings, which on each you swear an oath on. After this, he will show you the way out of the forest, were you to ever break any of the oaths, the next time you wake up will be back in that forest

ÖDEMARK HEL

From as early as the Stone Age, we can see the end of life and the beginning of birth are a continuous loop as if leaving and entering are holding hands. This is seen in passage graves with their entrances always facing the direction where the sun rises, it is likely these people held a belief that the sun is born again – the same way those who had passed, sitting in the passage graves, would have seen the sun rise the same way you see the light the first time you exit a womb

But not everyone is blessed with this beautiful loop. Those who have done evil knowingly again and again will have a different loop. Their eternity is set in the desolate lands of Helheim, home to the goddess Hel from norse mythology. While many may pass through these lands on their way to the underworld, there are those who will be stuck here in the swamps with thick tar and disgusting stench. Forced to walk through these lands towards the exit of the womb I've depicted here as a spiral. The good will get to where they are destined, be it the halls of Valhalla or to return to life once more to finish goals they didn't get to finish before. But the cowardly, greedy and evil will once again wake in these swamps, under the layer unable to breathe and having to fight themselves onto the surface just to walk this path again and again

So, through your journey in life, dare to stand up and dare to help others. Lead by example, not by judging and ordering others what they should do. Respect others' decisions if they harm no one, respect others' beliefs if that is what gives them courage and the will to go through day by day. Force not your beliefs onto others but help them on their way. This way, you will keep yourself from struggling through these swamps

STJARNGLÆR NOTT

The guiding Goddess, watching over you. She is the embodiment of the night, and in this rendition, I've depicted her as a clear nightsky with all of the stars showing. That is also what Stjarnglær Nótt means, a star clear night

Around her are constellations, distant planets and stars. Her skirt here is named bifröst and I've depicted it as the Milky Way - as the name bifröst could mean the shimmering path. In her hands, she is holding Tjasses eyes, a jötunn whose eyes were thrown into the sky. Her necklace is the shiny pole star - Polaris. Guiding you towards new adventures and journeys

SOLVÄND ODIN

The name Solvänd means the changing of the sun, the solstice. And just like the god Odin is masterful in shapeshifting, so is the sunwheel symbolizing the sun behind him - the sun alters everything we see and feel around us. During winter times is also when I've seen the most sun cross halos appear in the sky and to me Odin associates a lot with winter times, traveling from home to home. His eyes symbolize the two times of the year, one dark and full of mystery - the other wide open and paying close attention. I've depicted him wearing a cape of raven feathers and his helmet is etched with runes that say Hrafna on it, the Old Norse word for a raven.

His cape is also to symbolize the darkness covering the land during winter times, while his beard here is white and gleaming, like the summer sun. Just like the gods, the very sun, seasons and nature more broadly is to be honored and taken care of. Cause the nature around us is the true personification of all the gods around us. The changing of the sun is like law, it will always happen and you must overcome the changes that come with it. And this also applies to your personal life, we all have different equinoxes in our everyday lives - so let this remind you that when it's the darkest, it will only continue to get brighter. But when its the brightest, dont be wasteful and careless, but be smart and prepare so the dark periods are not as harsh.

VISDAL HOENIR

A god from Norse Mythology who, in some stories, was one of three gods to create humans. He is also associated with storks because of the etymology of his name, which in proto germanic means stork - or it is a loan word from greek to proto germanic meaning "the swan-like one." Thus, he would be the origin of the folklore that storks deliver babies, as he was one of three gods to create the first humans

For that reason, I've depicted him with a stork headdress and, on his garment, are petroglyph ships filled with people, symbolizing him carrying into the world the first humans. And the reason he is hovering runes from his hands is that Hoenir is a project I've been building for over a year now, and you can find it on the Valhyr site. It is an English to Old Norse translator - not just a rune converter - but actually turning English words into Old norse, and yes, you can also see those words in many different viking valhalla odin futhark runes. Therefore, Hoenir is hovering the runes cause he is bringing you the capability to experience this old language and play around with it

HUGINN, MUNINN & METINN

From old Norse mythology, we learn of the god Odin and his two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, representing thought and memory. He is afraid that one day they will fly so far away that they are unable to return, perhaps a metaphor for when he will go insane he will lose his mind and memories. It is also said in those tales from long ago that Odin searches for wisdom and is always eager to learn. He even sacrifices his eye and hangs from a tree for 9 days and 9 nights to learn of the runes. That is where my interpretation of the third raven comes from Metinn

The names for Huginn and Muninn come from Hugr and Munr with the ending -inn, which is a common thing that happens to words that are turned into names in Old Norse. The name Odinn itself has it, as his name comes from Odr with the -inn ending. The third ravens name Metinn I've derived from the word Metnaðr, which means a goal, aspiration, or dream

It is also in this piece that I've interpreted Muninn (memory) as the past, Huginn (thought) as the present, and Metinn (goals) as the future. As in my view, all of these are equally as important, and I would be very afraid if any of these ravens were to never return. We need memories to learn from and to have something to think back of. We need thoughts to react to things happening now and to be able to exist in the moment. And we need goals and dreams to aspire towards something, to always keep us moving and not sitting still. As when you just sit still is when you eventually go insane the same way if you lose your thoughts or memories
