Dated to around the 6th and 7th century they were rediscovered in 1870 from Öland. The plates were likely used to press metal sheets to be used as helmet decorations , like we see with the Valsgärde, Vendel era and Sutton Hoo helmets. This way the blacksmith could press the plates against thin sheets of metal to replicate the design and mass produce these designs. The depictions on these could be myths and known stories from that age, where a man fought two bears and an army of boar warriors and how Odin is followed by shapeshifters or warriors wearing wolf pelts. We don't know for certain but this drives our attention to how much lore and more there is to these gods and how very little we know nowadays, this design lives as a reminder of that.

Boar warriors

Called the Svinfylking in Old-Norse meaning 'Boar array/formation' these warriors fought in a formation that was referenced to as a boars head with two men in the front forming the boars snout and referenced to as the tusks of the formation. This can also be seen on the plate where two boar warriors are depicted, likely a reference to the formation or perhaps there was a story or myth associated with it as well. The boar warrior along with boar worship is among one of the oldest animal warrior types and not much survives about them - just artifacts we have found and a lot of it is left for speculation and looking at neighbouring tribes for possible references.These boar warriors were also popular already in the Germanic world where they were called the 'Schweinskopf' meaning 'Boars Head' and the formation was associated with them as well. The invention of the formation is associated to Odin, with supposedly the god of war teaching this to the humans.

Odin and a berserker

Berserker is the more common name and is used as an umbrella term for all kinds of animal warriors. But actually the different animal warrior types have their own names, this one here is an Ulfhednar meaning a 'Wolf Head' and the wolf cult was associated with Odin where as the bear cult was associated with Thor and the boar cult with possibly Freyr or Freya although I don't think there is a direct source that suggests the boar warriors were associated with any god except that the formation was invented by Odin. Also the plate has a missing eye on the spear dancer figure which suggest even more that it is the All-Father. And if that doesn't convince you yet - he also has two things coming from his head which appear as horns, they are actually meant to symbolize two birds, Huginn and Munnin. So we can be very sure this is Odin himself with a wolf warrior following him - considering the boar warrior image, this could be a hint that Ulfhedinn fought alone or as a sabotage unit with a smaller number of men.

Man between two bears

This is the most mysterious one. There are no stories of a man fighting two bears that I can recall but if we were to follow the previous plates - it could also be a plate associated with the Berserkers. If the first plate of the boar warriors is a reference to the two men in the front of the boar formation become the animal warrior called Svinfylking. And the second plate showing a man becoming a Ulfhedinn by following the path of Odin or being guided by Odin. Then perhaps this plate shows how to become a Berserker? This is my own speculation and as far as I'm concerned there is no evidence to what this plate means, but seeing as all of these plates are associated with a person or people and an animal then I'm making that guess.

The fourth plate

This one is not depicted on the design. But here we see a man taming what seems to be some gryphon-like beast. Now as associated above - perhaps these are mentions of how to become a certain warrior type? Fighting bears makes you a Berserker, you also get the pelt by slaying one. Following Odin and learning from him makes you a Ulfhedinn. Fighting in a war in the frontlines makes you a Svinfylking. And taming this beast makes you another certain type of warrior. Perhaps this is some unreachable goal or a joke to some certain tribe, maybe it's a myth that we have lost or not found yet. To me it seems all these plates depict some sort of ceremony or an occupation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0106/6565/6416/files/Torslunda1_6f7420a3-bfac-4b52-9cb7-9448c4fdfaa2.jpg?v=1777203001
jelling-wolves-skater-dress
Jelling Wolves Skater Dress

The story & symbolism

This design features wolves around the pattern entangled in a loop. Dated to more than 3000 years ago, these pants were found at Tarim Basin in todays China, but back in those days who inhabited those lands is debated. One of the possible culprits is the Tocharian people, as we have evidence from their burials on the site in a similar timeframe of 3000 years ago, some of these even contain Tocharian mummies, which is a glimpse back in time in terms of their appearnce, attire and values. These pants were worn by someone very important and there has been finds with similar patterns, so that means that the pattern was rather known - imagine a brand image, be it nowadays or similar to an Ulfberth sword. The pants themselves are crafted extremely well, the original ones were woven not stiched together and worn by someone on horseback, thats why the originals also have a centerpiece on the crotch. I've left this part out on the modern joggers render as it was not really that comfortable, unless you are riding a horse.

Oldest pants found

The pants were also found on one of the mummies from the Tarim Basin, labeled as the Turfan Man. The pattern at the bottom is a recurring one, found on pottery far away from the place of this mummy. The symbolism of this is uknown to us, it couldve been just a fashion choice as well, a pretty well known pattern - or perhaps this pattern meant something to people back in the day and thats why we see it pop up from time and time again. Similar hooked pattern also appears on the Överhogdal tapestry from Sweden, where the Yggdrasil branches are represented with a similar squareish hook style, so perhaps these symbolise the roots or branches of the tree of life. The helm split part is a spear that runs through the suncross symbol to hint at the oath Tyr broke when binding Fenrir, it shades the sun but then again it was a necessary step that seemed right at the time. The design branches out with a circle of stacked Tiwaz runes which roots read out Tiwaz in Elder Futhark. The chants written in runes run around the arm as well reading “LAÞU LAUKAR GAKAR ALU” which is up for debate what it means but one possibility is it reads “let healing tread nearby” – the latter part ALU is often found on many runic inscriptions and is speculated to be associated with Ale which ties into the Mead of Poetry. It held an important meaning when these inscriptions were made and was likely a way to empower or underline a certain ability. Nowaday a lot of languages still have hints to this word ALU for example in Estonian it’s ÕLU, Lithuanian ALAUS.

Right arm

The right arm consists of Fenrir swallowing half of the hand to pay homage to the story where Tyr lost his arm to the large wolf when the gods tried to bind him. The gods brought different chains to shackle Fenrir as the wolf was growing so large that they became afraid of him and Odin had heard that during Ragnarokkr – that the allfathers faith would end in the hands of Fenrir. Thus the gods decided to bind him, fooling him into a competition to see how many chains he could break, hoping that they could lock him down. But the great wolf broke all the chains that were tried. Eventually the gods had the best craftsmen, the dwarves, create a shackle made of impossible things like the sinew of a bear and the beards of women. Fenrir saw this measly thing that he was about to be chained with and didn’t trust it – so he asked one of the gods to place their hand between it’s jaws in case they are trying to trick him. Tyr was the only one up to take this task as back then breaking an oath was the worst thing one could do, honor had great value. So as Fenrir understood that he can’t break free he locked his jaws and broke off Tyr’s hand. A sword was placed between Fenrirs jaws so he could not howl while locked away – the sword is present in this design as well with the runes reading “Fenrir” on it. The lower part of Fenrir is stylized in a pattern similar to the Viking age art as well as a rune row running through it with the chants towards Tyr – this is to symbolize the chain that is made of impossible things, it wouldn’t look regular but something very otherwordly.

Front design

The front repeats the part seen on the left arm but instead of a stacked Tiwaz rune it features the sun cross inside it. There was a tapestry found in that town, that first was believed to date to the medieval times - fantastic find! But on further researched, it turned out this was much, much older. This likely reaches back into the viking age and maybe even deeper. Thus the symbolism on this piece became under question. There are animals with many legs on it - perhaps Sleipnir? Perhaps they symbolize animals running fast as Ragnarök is arriving.

On this design I've only used the Yggdrasil from that desin, and the look is kinda knitted looking, to pay homage to the tapestry. On it are depicted many animals, symbols, people and beautiful patterns. First it was believed to date to the medieval times, but on further research it was evident that this is much, much older - likely from the Viking age or perhaps even before that. Thus it was agreed that the great symbol in the center depicts the tree Yggdrasil, from which the god Odin hanged himself to learn the runes.

It is also notable that on this design are animals with 8 feet. Possibly Sleipnir? Or perhaps depicting animals running fast, and where Sleipnir got his likeness from too. There are also temples or some kind of buildings on these and ships - therefore it is believed the depict the arriving of Ragnarök. In my opinion it symbolises some kind of great movement, either a migration - as we know around the viking age was also the migration period. And one of the possible causes for the viking age was that the people started moving out from Scandinavia, the reasons are unknown - perhaps this depicts this period, as it dates to roughly the same period.

YGGDRASIL

The symbol for Yggdrasil, it is shown almost extruding from an animals head - this could symbolize some animal at the depths of Yggdrasil, but I believe its just a question of perspective. I believe the animal is just in front of Yggdrasil. On the top of the tree we can see a bird, and we have literary evidence of a bird on top of Yggdrasil as well - named Víðópnir.

OTHER TREE

There is notably another symbol on this as well - that is very similar. It varies a little bit but also features a bird on top. My own interpretation is that this is also Yggdrasil but from futher away. So the rows on the tapestry are as if zooming out and showing that the whole land is filled with people and animals moving in one direction. Here you can also see an animal with 8 legs which I believe is Sleipnir.

ANIMALS AND OTHER

On the rest of the design are very interesting different animals - birds, horses, deers and so on. Also you can see what seems to be a gaming board for the 'viking chess' known as Hnefatafl. And you might have noticed it - another horse with 8 legs with two people on it. There is the story of Hadingus riding with Odin on a horse thats likely Sleipnir, this story comes from Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus. The other story that would've applied is when Hermod went to get his brother Baldr from Hel - he rode there on Sleipnir, but he did not return with Baldr. So this could be the story that has reached us through Saxo or it is a story that has not made its way to us yet. It can be lost to time, or it can be hiding somewhere, waiting to be found again.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0106/6565/6416/files/Overhogdal1_cdf3392c-530a-457e-96ed-8a82d76f6bd3.jpg?v=1777203042
